Ulvophyceae is a class of green algae. They take a wide variety of shapes that may consist of a few cells, long filaments, thin sheets of cells, or coenocytic cells and live in diverse habitats. Many are macroscopic seaweeds including Ulva (sea lettuce), Cladophora, and Codium, but there are also many freshwater and terrestrial species. They are distinguished mainly on the basis of ultrastructural morphology, life cycle and molecular phylogenetic data.
