Kingdom: Plantae
Phylum: Tracheophyta
Class: Liliopsida (Monocotyledons)

Liliopsida is a class that comprises of flowering, seed producing, plants that produce an embryo with a single cotyledon hence they are commonly called monocotyledons or monocots. The first green blade emerging from the seed upon germination is the cotyledon and it contains sugars and other nutrients for growth until the leaf is able to photosynthesize. Features that are generally common to members of this class include vascular bundles that are irregularly distributed in cross-section of the stem, leaves that have parallel veins, and flower parts that are usually in multiples of three. Fewer than 10% of monocotyledons are more or less woody stemmed. Woody monocotyledons, in contrast to woody dicotyledons, usually have an unbranched stem with a terminal crown of large leaves. Many monocotyledons utilise aquatic habitats.
