Ginkgoopsida is a class that contains a single order, single genus and single living species, the well known Ginkgo biloba tree, also called the Maidenhair tree. The definition of this class is therefore the same as that of the species it contains. Ginkgo trees are living fossils. There is only one living species of ginkgo present on Earth and it appears nearly identical to ancient fossils. It is also the only known example of a broad-leafed, deciduous, gymnosperm tree.
