Tremellomycetes are a are a nutritionally heterogeneous class of dimorphic fungi comprising saprotrophs, animal parasites, and fungicolous species. Dimorphic means the fungi can exist in the form of a mold or a yeast. Saprotrophs are organisms that obtain their energy from dead organic matter which may be decaying pieces of plants or animals. Many species, such as the yellow coloured Tremella mesenterica have a gelatinous (jelly-like) fruiting body so they are commonly referred to as jelly fungi. Scientists have described around 377 different species within the Tremellomycetes class worldwide. As with other classes of fungi, there is considerable diversity of form and size of members of this class.
