Kingdom: Fungi
Phylum: Ascomycota
Class: Leotiomycetes (Fungi)

The Leotiomycetes are an ecologically diverse class of non-lichenised fungi that is regarded as the inoperculate class of discomycetes within the phylum Ascomycota. It includes mycorrhizas, endophytes of roots and leaves, plant pathogens, mammalian pathogens, and saprobes. Many members of this class cause serious plant diseases. Discomycetes is a former taxonomic class that contained all the cup, sponge, brain, and some club-like fungi. Inoperculate discomycetes are those where the ascospores escape through an apical circular pore at the tip of the ascus (a sac-like spore producing structure) or by splitting of ascus at its apex.
