Kingdom: Fungi
Phylum: Ascomycota
Class: Sordariomycetes (Fungi)

Sordariomycetes, previously called pyrenomycetes, is one of the largest classes in the ascomycota containing over 600 genera and 3000 known species spread across 28 orders. The class comprises of a highly diverse range of fungi mainly characterised by perithecial (flask shaped) ascomata with asci that lack a definite operculum (lid) and have only a single wall. They function in virtually all terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems worldwide, growing in habitats as diverse as soil, dung, leaf litter, and decaying wood as decomposers. They are also fungal parasites, and insect, human, and plant pathogens.
