Kingdom: Fungi
Phylum: Ascomycota
Class: Geoglossomycetes (Earth Tongues)

Geoglossomycetes are a type of fungi commonly known as Earth Tongues, typically characterised by large, dark, club-shaped, terrestrial fruiting bodies. Earth Tongues have been reported from every continent in the world except Antarctica. The class Geoglossomycetes is a recently created class of fungi that currently contains only the order Geoglossales which contains only the family Geoglossaceae with five genera Geoglossum, Nothomitra, Sarcoleotia, Thuemenidium and Trichoglossum. These fungi have long been a subject of research, however the taxonomy within the group has historically been hindered by the lack of reliable morphological characteristics, uncertain ecological associations, and the inability to grow these fungi in culture.
