Kingdom: Protozoa
Phylum: Mycetozoa
Class: Myxomycetes (Plasmodial Slime Molds)

Myxomycetes, also called Mycetozoa, are fungus like organisms within the kingdom Protozoa. Commonly known as true slime molds, they usually occur in decaying plant material and exhibit characteristics of both protozoans (single-celled microorganisms) and fungi. The vegetative (actively growing and feeding) phase consists of a multinucleate amoeboid mass called plasmodium. The plasmodium changes shape as it creeps over damp wood, leaves, or soil, ingesting bacteria, molds, and fungi. The plasmodium is characteristically covered by a layer of slime that is secreted as the plasmodium creeps.
