Gastropods are the largest group of molluscs and one of the most diverse groups of animals in form, habit, and habitat. Most gastropods have a single, usually spirally coiled, shell into which the body can be withdrawn but the shell is lost or reduced in some groups. Gastropods have a muscular foot which most species use for a creeping form of locomotion. In some species it is modified for swimming or burrowing. Most gastropods have a well defined head that includes eyes, one or two pairs of tentacles, and a concentration of nervous tissue called a ganglion. Gastropods live almost everywhere on Earth including salt water, fresh water, and terrestrial habitats from mountains to forests, fields and deserts. In the ocean they live in all areas from the intertidal zone to the deepest trenches.
