Bay of Plenty Landscapes

This group contains all our photo galleries of New Zealand landscapes from the Bay of Plenty Region region.

The Bay of Plenty is a large bight in the north-eastern coast of the North Island of New Zealand. Stretching 260km from Cape Runaway, its most eastern point, to the base of the Coromandel Peninsula in the north, the Bay of Plenty incorporates several small islands and its beautiful beaches adjoin the Bay of Plenty Region. One of the most notable islands in the bay is White Island, an active andesite stratovolcano, which is New Zealand's most active cone volcano. Located within the Bay of Plenty Region is the City of Tauranga with its well known landmark Mount Maunganui, the city of Rotorua, and several towns including Katikati, Maketu, Opotiki, Pukehina Beach, Waihi Beach, and Whakatane. The bay was named by Captain James Cook after he noticed abundant food supplies at several Maori villages, which were in stark contrast to his earlier observations in Poverty Bay.
